Harvey Frauenglass, aged 91, of Embudo, NM, died at home on April 17, 2021, surrounded by loving friends and family. He was born August 1, 1929 in Hartford, Connecticut, eldest of 5 children born to Jacob and Lillian Frauenglass. Harvey graduated from the University of Chicago in 1948, attended the University of Edinburgh, and received his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa in 1958. He served in the Army during the Korean War, stationed in Erlangen, Germany where he met Dita Adam; married 27 years, they had 4 children, Mark, Andrew, Marni and Susan. Harvey taught at Northern Arizona University, then worked for Sandia National Lab, produced educational media, and advocated successfully for Bosque preservation in Albuquerque. After moving to work at Los Alamos National Lab, he met and married his wife, artist Gayle Fulwyler Smith. They moved to a farm in Embudo where they lived for 38 years, hosting many visitors and especially the annual Dixon Studio Tour. Harvey made Big Willow Cider with the help of family and friends from the variety of apple trees in the old orchard. Harvey wrote a book “Cider Master of Rio Oscuro” which he said was a treatise to future cider makers about what he had learned about apples. It was also an autobiography of life on the farm and a memorial to his daughter, Marni. He enjoyed his decades of interactions with people at Farmers’ markets in Santa Fe, Taos, and Los Alamos. Harvey was a storyteller and never tired of deep conversations with relatives and friends. He is survived by his wife Gayle Fulwyler Smith Frauenglass; sons Mark and Andrew Frauenglass, daughter Susan F Swierc; son- in-law Peter Keegan; stepchildren Connie, Richard and James Fulwyler; grandchildren Blue, Jani; Trevor, Jessica, Paxson, and Amare, sister Judith, brother Lloyd; several cousins, nieces and nephews, and a host of longtime friends. Harvey was preceded in death by his daughter, Marni, and two siblings, Marilyn and Elliot. A virtual memorial will be held June 6, 2021; see www.facebook.com/harveyfrauenglass for information. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated, to: Embudo Valley Library, P.O. Box 310, Dixon, NM 87527. Please note “Harvey Frauenglass” in check memo.
