Carol Louise MacKinnon
April 24th, 1954 - April 23rd, 2018
Carol Louise MacKinnon Carol Louise MacKinnon passed away at home on April 23, 2018, after a long and hard-fought battle with ovarian cancer. Carol was born April 24, 1954, in Oakland, California to Florence Lundgren MacKinnon and Dr. Roger Alan MacKinnon, who was serving at the naval hospital there. Carol was raised in northern New Jersey and attended school there. She matriculated at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts and attended Amherst College in her junior year. She graduated from Smith in 1975 and then attended the Washington College of Law at American University in D.C., earning her law degree in 1978. She served as law clerk to The Hon. Kenneth R. Harkins, Trial Division, U.S. Court of Claims for one year and then worked as an associate attorney in the D.C. office of Duncan, Weinberg & Miller until 1982. Next Carol worked for two years as a contract attorney to a Louisiana law firm helping to prepare two large cases for trial. In 1984 she began practicing business law in Tacoma as one of the founding principals of Smith Alling, P.S. (then Smith, Alling, Hudson & O’Connor), leaving the firm in 1995 to start a solo law practice and spend more time parenting. Carol continued practicing law until shortly before her death, though she cut back to serving only a few clients and providing arbitration and mediation services during her four-year battle with cancer. While a student at Amherst College in 1973, Carol met Skip Broadhead who was to become her partner in life. Carol and Skip were married in 1980 and moved to Tacoma WA in 1982 when Skip began a new job here. Carol fell in love with the region and lived her life here with gusto: hiking, skiing, backpacking, sailing, gardening, gourmet cooking, taking photographs, and enjoying and supporting the arts. She was deeply devoted to her two daughters and to her husband. Carol was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Her family is grateful to the clergy and congregation for their prayers and support. Carol is survived by her husband William A. (“Skip”) Broadhead and her cherished daughters Elizabeth B. Cave (Rob) of University Place WA and Sarah C. Broadhead of Tacoma WA, her brother Stuart A. MacKinnon (Beth) of Wellesley Hills MA, sister-in-law Allison B. Saxe of New York NY, new grandson Joshua J. Cave, and her niece, nephews and cousins. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 2nd at 3:00 pm at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 7410 S. 12th Street, Tacoma, WA. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Edwards Memorial, Funerals Homes, Chapels and Crematories. 253-566-1008
