Freeman Stickney passed away of cancer-related causes on March 31, 2020 in Olympia, Washington. He was born April 14, 1932 to Freeman and Catherine (Marten) Stickney in Monroe, Michigan. Stic graduated from Monroe High School, and completed several correspondence courses and classes while in the military. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and 16 years in the U.S. Air Force. During his 20-year military career, he was stationed in Guam, Korea, and Japan (four years with his family). Stic was trained to be a weather observer while in the Navy and a weather forecaster in the Air Force. Upon retirement from the military, he worked for the National Weather Service for 22 years, retiring in 1994 as the last official-in-charge of the Olympia National Weather Service Office at the Olympia Airport. Stic married Jeanne Mercia Gaunt on May 15, 1954 in Winslow, Bainbridge Island, Washington. An Olympia resident for 28 years, he spent 22 of those years on the shores of Lake St. Clair. He described himself as “a proud atheist.” Stic was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jeanne, in 2008; and daughter, Heidi Cross. He is survived by his daughter, Cathy Griffin of Olympia; son, Paul Stickney of Tacoma, Washington; son-in-law, Chris Cross of Auburn, Washington; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and siblings, Robert Stickney, Larry Stickney, Lela Schwartz and Linda Ridley, all of Monroe, Michigan. At his request, there will be no services. Please leave condolences or share memories and photos on the Tribute Wall to the left.
