James Sterling Gibbs passed away at 97 years old on July 22, 2017 in Lacey, Washington. Hewas born March 24, 1920 to Te and Florence Gibbs in Bridgeport, Washington. James graduated from Brewster High School in Brewster, Washington, and attended Wenatchee Community College. He lived in Brewster, Okanogan, and Alta Lake, Washington, and in Tumwater, Washington for 13 years. James married Doris Wittmeyer on September 2, 1945. James served in the National Guard starting in 1940, and the U.S. Army starting from 1941 through 1945. He fought in World War II, serving in Sitka, Alaska, and the South Pacific. After his military service, he worked with the Okanogan County Public Utility District as a lineman, and then later as the local manager. James was a man of many hobbies. He loved tinkering with his ham radio, and spending hours wood carving. He took great pleasure in volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America. He worked with them for many years, going on to earn the “Silver Beaver Award,” an award earned for registered adults who make a true impact with the young people they work with. James was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, MARS (the Military Auxiliary Radio System), and the Boy Scouts of America. James is survived by his wife, Doris Gibbs of Lacey, Washington; his son, Jim Gibbs of Wye Mills, Maryland; his daughters, Maureen Daniek of Seattle, Washington, and Kathy Peterson of Olympia, Washington; as well as four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
