James A. Gabel, 73, of Rapid City passed away on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at his home. Jim served in the United States Air Force for 24 years and retired as a Lt. Col. He was presented a Bronze Star by Senator John Thune, thirty years after the fact. Jim was consulted on five different books; three on the civil war and two on Rustic Facs in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. One of Jim's books was used by the Smithsonian. Jim and Sally would have celebrated 50 years of marriage at the end of June 2014. He is survived by his wife Sally Gabel of Rapid City; two sons, Kenneth Gabel of Rapid City, Christopher (London) Gabel and their children, Thadeus and Domanik of North Port, FL; his daughter, Karla Marie (Clay) Engelbrecht and their children, Morgan and Reid of Wallis, TX; his brother, Beau Gabel of Chuluota, FL; and his sister, Diane Letitia ""Tish"" (Larry) Thornberry of Tampa, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Col. P. Ernest Gabel and Roberta Gabel. Visitation will be from 5pm to 7pm on Monday May 5, 2014 at Farley Funeral Home in Venice.
