Edwin Harold Shapiro
August 7, 1925 — January 8, 2018
Edwin Harold Shapiro, 92, of St. Petersburg, passed away January 8, 2018.
Edwin was born in Baltimore, MD and has been a St. Petersburg resident since 1974. He was a World War ll veteran and served proudly in the Marine Corps, where he was sent to fight in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Ed was married for 63 years to the love of his life, Janet. They lived in Baltimore, Detroit, MI, and Annapolis, MD, before settling in Florida.
In addition to time with his family, some of Ed’s best memories of his life was owning a popular tavern in Annapolis and becoming a builder in St. Petersburg. He was an avid boater and fisherman, whether on the Chesapeake Bay or the Gulf of Mexico. Recently, Ed was as an active member of Congregation B’nai Israel, where he could be found daily at either morning or evening services, or both. He would say that he felt close to his loving wife there. Ed was never without his Marine Corps baseball hat and took great pleasure in strangers thanking him for his service.
His greatest attributes were as a husband, father and friend. Ed is survived by his loving family; son, David (Robin) Shapiro; daughters, Lauren (Scott) Zimmerman and Susan Haskel; sister, Janet (Sheldon) Leibowitz; grandchildren, Adam, Todd, Alyssa, Zachary, Marissa, Elizabeth, Holly, and Lily; and great-grandson, Levi. He was predeceased by his beloved Janet.
