Dr. Renate Ellen Bernstein; beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister, lost her life on June 28, 2013.
Renate was born in Oberammergau, Germany on July 22, 1950 and graduated from Berlin American High School in 1968. After moving to Massachusetts, she graduated from Boston City Hospital School of Nursing, becoming a Registered Nurse. Later, Renate and her family moved to Florida, where she had been a St. Petersburg resident for 35 years prior to her passing. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Florida, continuing on to receive her Master's and Ph.D. in Marine Science at the University of South Florida's College of Marine Science; where she most recently worked as a research assistant. Renate was an accomplished marine scientist, widely published in text books and scientific journals, including Science and Nature. She was one of the foremost authorities on marine microorganisms and ocean chemistry.
Renate is survived by her husband of 40 years, Dr. Bruce Bernstein; her son, Nathanael and daughter-in-law, Sarah; two grandsons, Trevor and Lukas; mother, Christa; and two sisters, Beatrix and Andrea. She will live on in our hearts and minds forever.
A gathering of friends will take place on Wednesday, July 3rd from 1-3 PM at the David C. Gross Funeral Home, 6366 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg.
