Richard S. Reece, 68, of Federal Way, WA, passed away at his home on August 16, 2025, after a long struggle with declining health from Parkinson’s.

Rick was born in Kirksville, MO of a military family; which provided him experiences living in Canada, Japan, Germany, and settling in southern California for his latter childhood and early adult years.  Rick married Mary in Lompoc, CA.  He, his wife and their first son moved to Federal Way, WA in 1992.

Rick was a photographer who loved adventure and new experiences.  He attended Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, CA, the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, and California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo.  His photo/video career included working for the San Diego Gazette, Bang Magazine, USAF 1369th Photo Squadron based in Vandenberg AFB and Edwards AFB, USN Bremerton Shipyard, the Boeing Company, and developed his own business. He also taught photo editing at Highline College in Des Moines, WA.  He provided joy to many as he photographed their weddings, 4H horse shows, family reunions, and school portraits.

Rick enjoyed tennis, golf, football, scuba diving, hiking, and back-country canoeing.  He was an avid BSA Adult Scout volunteer, devoting his time and skills to the organization as he introduced Scouting to his two sons. He was a leader in Cub Scout Pack 366, expanded the Cub Scout experience to a second elementary school by starting Cub Scout Pack 369, was a leader in Troops 366 and 342, started Venture Crew 376 to support Physical Education at the Federal Way Public Academy (FWPA), was Camp Director for 3 years of Cub Scout Day Camp at Camp Kilworth in Federal Way, and supported numerous BSA District and Council events as Range-Master, Archery Instructor, member of the Order of the Arrow, and Pack, Troop, and Venture crew Adult Leader.  He attended BSA Summer Camp with his sons’ Packs and Troops every year between 2001 and 2015.  Rick and his son Andrew earned the BSA High Adventure Triple Crown by completing the Minnesota Northern Tier 10-night Boundary Waters canoe trek, Florida Sea Base Scuba Adventure, and New Mexico Philmont Scout Ranch 12-day backcountry Trek.  Additionally, Rick and Andrew twice adventured through the Canadian Bowron Lakes on week-long canoe explorations with Troop 342.

Rick was an active PTSA member throughout his sons’ preschool, elementary school, and middle school years.  He held office positions many of those 15 years and he supported funding drives with creative ideas.

Rick is survived by his wife Mary, sons Andrew and Liam, and sister and brother-in-law Cheryl and Albert Navarro.  A Celebration of Life is scheduled April 22, 2026 at Camp Kilworth.
