Born in Auburn, Washington, on August 31, 1960. Greg was the second oldest in a family of six children. He began boxing at the tender age of five, a passion that would define his life. His talent and determination carried him through the amateur ranks culminating in winning a bronze medal in the US Olympic trials before he turned professional in1982. He quickly made a name for himself in the boxing world, known for his grit, technical skill, and unwavering resilience in the ring. Greg held the NABF title and four world championship titles, including the IBF welterweight Championship twice and the WBO Light Welterweight title. Greg’s fight against Julio Cesar Chavez set a world record for attendance, drawing a crowd of over 132,000 spectators, the largest ever for a boxing match. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Greg was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008 and the California Boxing Hall of Fame in 2015. In his later years, Greg dedicated himself to training upcoming fighters in Washington. He retired from professional boxing in 1999. Outside of boxing, Greg was a man of deep loyalty and humor, always quick with a story and a laugh. He was enthusiastic about mentoring young boxers and giving back to the sport that shaped his life. Greg’s legacy lives on through his four children and five grandchildren, Daughter Jasmine/Grandson Blaine, Daughter Cassandra (Michael) grandson Gregory, Son Brady, Son Layne (Kiana) Grandson Ashton and twin granddaughters Nova & Remi.
