Ruth Evelyn Washington
December 5, 1942 — May 4, 2025
A pillar of strength and inspiration to her family and community, Ruth Washington (December 5, 1942 - May 4, 2025), daughter of Jerry Smith, Sr. and Earnestine Smith, spent her childhood growing up on a farm in Magnolia, Mississippi, where food was farmed and raised. She enjoyed gumbo, buffalo fish, mustard greens, watermelon and corn. Family was the village with her sister Rosia and brothers Jerry and Darvie, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She especially loved having family over for gumbo, which consisted of eating too much gumbo, playing spades and dominoes.
As a single mother of four children, new horizons were in view, and she moved to Washington State in hopes of providing them with a better life, full of opportunities. Despite the trials, there were many triumphs along the way, and her goal for her children to have a bright future was fully achieved.
Ruth took advantage of every opportunity for advancement, building and sharpening her skills whenever possible. From sewing in the factory to working at Boeing, Ruth's strong work ethic was demonstrated by her willingness to always take initiative, be reliable, and strive for excellence. She valued her family, education, honesty, loyalty, and generosity. These were pillars in her life and were evident through her ability to face her obstacles with fortitude, were witnessed in her dedication & devotion to her loved ones, and shown in her desire to be an example to all she met. Whether at work or home, Ruth enriched the lives of those who crossed her path.
