Edmund Roslyn Dewing, Jr. passed away on September 8, 2015, at age 90. Born on August 11, 1925, he was the son of Edmund R. Dewing and Elizabeth Dewing. He grew up with his two brothers and sister in Wellesley, MA. They were the 12th generation from Andrew Dewing who was the first white settler of the area. Ed attended Deerfield Academy and Staunton Military Academy. When he was 17, he enlisted in the army and did his military training at Ft. Leonard Wood. He served as a forward observer in the 89th infantry and 341st field artillery. He was awarded 2 bronze stars for heroic action crossing the Rhine River under enemy fire to establish an observation post and again for carrying a radio down a line of fire within 400 yards of enemy guns to establish an observation post in a building in St. Gearshausen, Germany. Upon returning from the war, he briefly attended Boston College, and in 1951, he married Roberta Jean Chambers. He went to work for the Towle Silver Company and moved to Indianapolis. In 1955, they returned to MA and Ed took a position with Harold Cabot Advertising in Boston where he would be elected Vice President, and he again resided in Wellesley. In 1970, he purchased the Whitehall Inn in Camden, Maine, which he owned until 2005. Jean Dewing died in 1988, and in 1998, he married Ann Failing. Together they continued to share their mutual loves of golf, music, reading, and traveling. Ed was also predeceased by his parents, his brothers Andrew and Jerry, and his sister Ginny. Surviving are his wife, Ann, son Edmund R. Dewing III (Chip) of Hope, ME; son Jonathan (J.C.) and daughter-in-law Wendy of Hope, ME; daughter Heidi May; and two grandchildren, Emily and Zachary of Sarasota, FL. Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held on September 22, 2015 at 10:30AM at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden, Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011, or to Tidewell Hospice, Inc., 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
