John Kalo

John Kalo was born in Lorain, Ohio August 23, 1925. After graduating Lorain High School, John joined the United States Air Force and served in WWII. Upon discharge, he attended Kent State University, graduating with a bachelors and masters degree which led to a rewarding 35-year career in education. John married his high school sweetheart, Therese Sislowski in 1948. They raised seven children with lots of love and devotion. He and Therese were married 65 years before she preceded him in death, a loss he felt everyday. In the last years of his life his favorite pastime was sharing memories of their life together. In addition to his career as an educator, he was a skilled carpenter, building and remodeling several homes during his life. After retirement, John and Therese moved to Englewood, Florida settling in Brook to Bay where they reunited with high school friends and began meeting new friends. The relationships cultivated in this wonderful community afforded John and Therese many active, happy years. Throughout his life, John loved to tell stories, sing along with his favorite crooners and make people laugh. John passed away June 8th peacefully in his own bed as he wished. He is survived by his children; Kathy Wilson of Mentor, Ohio, James Kalo of Nokomis, Florida, Janet Kalo (Charlie) Bengel of Alexandria, Virginia, Joyce Kalo (Jeff) Formanek of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Christine Kalo (Jim) Casamento of Springfield, Virginia, Ken (Kim) Kalo of Cincinnati, Ohio and a brother, Tom Kalo. John also leaves behind fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Robert Kalo. The family wishes to thank Tidewell Hospice for all the professional and personal care given to John. His children are especially grateful to the wonderful neighbors who always showed love and care to their parents. A memorial service will be held on Friday June 10 at 10:00 am at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, 770 Kilbourne Avenue, Englewood, Florida. Farley Funeral Home in Venice is handling the arrangements.
