A Life of Purpose: Honoring Rakim Sharpe

March 12, 1997 – April 9, 2026

We gather today to celebrate a life that, while shorter than we ever imagined, was wider and deeper than most of us will ever achieve. Rakim Sharpe was born on March 12, 1997, and for 29 years, he walked among us as a living testament to a different kind of strength.

A Heart Without Malice

To know Rakim was to know peace. In a world that often demands we take sides or harbor grudges, Rakim refused. He held no malice, no hate, and no resentment—even toward those who were unjust to him. He was a child of God who lived the commandment to honor his parents and family against all odds.

He moved through life without the frantic urgency that plagues the rest of us. He wasn't chasing the clock, yet he never hesitated when someone needed him. The phrases "no" or "I can’t" simply weren't in his vocabulary. If there was a need, Rakim was the answer.

Beyond Worldly Expectations

Rakim was, by every definition, an intelligent and capable man. He could hold a conversation with anyone, on any subject, at any time. He "checked the boxes" that society tells us matter:

  • Graduating with Honors
  • Earning his degree in Aviation Mechanics
  • Living a life free of drugs, violence, or unlawful paths

But while we took pride in those milestones, Rakim remained humble beyond words. Those achievements didn't fill his heart because he knew his purpose wasn't found in a title or a paycheck. He fought against his own grain to please us, meeting those worldly expectations even when his soul was pulling him elsewhere. He knew his purpose was greater than what we wanted for him.

Strength in Service

Rakim’s true stand was always taken on behalf of others. While we often told him, "You need to help yourself before you help others," Rakim lived by a different code.

Even on his worst days, you could find him on the streets, serving the helpless and the forgotten. It broke our hearts to see him in those spaces, but that was our perspective, not his. Where we saw struggle, Rakim saw an opportunity to love. His gentleness was his greatest strength, and his courage to stand up against injustice spoke volumes louder than any shout.

Moving Forward with Kindness

Rakim’s passing on April 9th has left a void in our lives that will never be filled. Our hearts are broken, and our world feels smaller without him. But Rakim didn’t leave us empty-handed. His faith and unwavering commitment to his purpose gave us a blueprint for truly living.

Instead of asking why his time expired so soon, let us honor him by changing how we walk through this world. Let us leave here today with:

  • Kindness without judgment
  • Justice for all, not just those we love
  • A hand reached out to the helpless

Rakim lived for others. Today, and every day forward, let us live a little more like him.

Rest in peace, Rakim. Your purpose is fulfilled.
