Hazel Jo Reed
July 8, 1938 — July 9, 2009
Hazel Jo Reed, known as Josie to her friends, died the morning of July 9th, 2009. She is survived by her daughters, Anna and Logan.Josie was a mathematician who graduated with a B.S. from Reed College in Portland, and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Technical Institute in Pittsburgh, PA. She taught at the University of California, Long Beach and Oberlin College in Ohio before settling in Olympia, Washington and teaching for over 25 years at The Evergreen State College. In addition to her passion for mathematics, Josie was a skilled teacher and avidly curious scholar of literature, creative writing and comparative theologies. Above all she was an educator who recognized quality of mind in her students and gave all she had to aid them in their advancing studies.
Josie was also an extremely gifted photographer, working in black and white and utilizing the darkroom at TESC to do her printing. With her Leica in hand, Josie took pictures both locally and during her beloved train trips on Amtrak all over the United States. She was an incredible knitter and cook who loved to prepare elaborate meals for her friends. Throughout her life she cared deeply for animals, and her farm on Olympia’s West Side will remain a sanctuary for animals, domestic and wild.
