Betty Lou Singleton

Betty Lou Singleton, 79 of Columbia, died Friday, April 1, 2022, after a long illness. She was born to two schoolteachers, Marion Vance and Jane Percy Whetsel, in Brownsville, PA, and graduated from Brashear Joint High School in 1960. She moved to Baltimore to study, and while working at the IRS met her future husband, Glenn, on a blind date in May of 1965. He was a sergeant in the Air Force who grew up on a farm in Steele, Missouri, had gotten lost, and arrived at her aunt’s house four hours late. They hit it off anyway, and Glenn thought he’d hit the jackpot (and he had). After a whirlwind courtship the couple were married the next month at Taylor Chapel in Baltimore and thus began a fifty-six-year romance. They relocated to Ft. Meade, MD where Betty worked for the National Security Agency. She gave up a promising career at the NSA to accompany her husband to various postings including AK, CO, HI, DE, Turkey, and the Philippines before settling in Columbia, SC. Betty finished a distinguished Civil Service career at the Dorn VA Research Division. She leaves behind her husband, Glenn; son, Michael; sister, Barbara of Indiana, PA; brother, Richard of Pittsburgh, PA; her sister-in-law, Cora Jo and James Holt of Smithton, IL. She was a beloved mother, sister, cousin, aunt, and grand aunt to many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Funeral services will be at the Thompson Funeral Home on Leesburg Road with viewing from 12pm to 1pm April 5, 2022, after which time the funeral service will commence.
