James H Lawson
January 15, 1938 — May 14, 2026
James H. Lawson, lovingly known as “Jimmy,” transitioned to Heaven, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, love, and faithful provision for his family. He was born to Hobert and Lettie Lawson in Norton, Virginia. Jim had four brothers: Glenn, Robert, Kenneth, and Bill Lawson.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loyal friend. He and his beloved wife, Joyce Lawson, shared 69 wonderful years of marriage. They were high school sweethearts whose love endured through every season of life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Lawson; his son, Garry Lawson and wife Vickie; his daughter, Kelly Trostle and husband Jerry; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Popi” or “Pop.” He was preceded in death by his son, James H. Lawson II (“Jimmy”).
Jim attended Manatee County High School, where he distinguished himself as a talented football and track athlete. In honor of his accomplishments and contributions, he was inducted into the Hall of Honor for athletes in 2024.
Jim dedicated much of his life to his career as a lineman with Florida Power & Light, beginning in 1957 and faithfully serving until his retirement in 1993. Beyond his work, Jim enjoyed building airboats and spending time fishing, passions that reflected his love for the outdoors and the Florida lifestyle.
In his later years, Jim was a faithful member of Manatee Baptist Church and loved attending church and worshiping with his church family.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m. at Manatee Baptist Church, located at 1501 7th Avenue East. The service will be officiated by Pastor Rick Chaffin, Pastor Steve Aaron and Pastor Tom Winter.
Jim will be remembered for his quiet strength, great sense of humor, unwavering work ethic, generous heart, and deep love for his family and friends. His life touched many, and his memory will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.
