Dr. Mary Malone Curtin

On the morning of May 28, 2020, Mary Malone Curtin, MD, passed away in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was born to Elizabeth and Louis Malone on July 10, 1926 in Old Swan, Liverpool, England. She and her family were evacuated from Liverpool during the bombing of the city during World War II. She graduated from Notre Dame College and received her medical degree from Liverpool University. She showed how adventurous she could be when she came to United Hospital in Port Chester, New York, for a year's residency, based on an ad in a medical journal. She told us they advertised better pay and that she wanted to earn enough money to buy herself a car when she returned home. She met her future husband William Curtin during that year. They married, settled in Port Chester and raised four children. In 1971, her husband’s work took them to North Carolina and she resettled the family in that new environment. Our mother was an adventurous lady who always said "Why not"? when confronted with a challenge. She also enjoyed and appreciated the little things in life, and was known for her dry sense of humor. She took great interest in all aspects of life, and gave us a deep connection to the world unseen that we treasure. Our mother was predeceased by her husband William Curtin, her parents Elizabeth and Louis Malone and her four brothers, Christopher, Peter, Vincent and Bernard. Her brother Vincent, Bishop Vincent Malone of Liverpool, predeceased her by 10 days. We are comforted by the thought of them together in the next life and not surprised that they chose to leave together. Mary Malone Curtin is survived by her children Elizabeth Sequeira, MD, Patricia Sullivan, Esq (Robert), Michael Curtin, Chris Wolf Hunter, grandsons Philip Sequeira and Robert Sullivan III, and a large extended family in England and the United States. The family wishes to express our boundless gratitude to Winnie Hanna, who cared for our mother for the past five years. Mother called her the “daughter of my heart”. She made our mother’s final five years happy and peaceful. Winnie was ably assisted by Mary Courtney. Our mother would also want to say her goodbyes to her friends at the senior lunch at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. A Requiem Mass will be conducted at our Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church at 503 North Main Street, Belmont, North Carolina 28012, on Tuesday, June 9 at 11 AM.
