Mrs. Ellen McDonald Chason of Charlotte passed away August 20, 2018 at the nursing facility in Southminster. She was born September 8, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia and was the daughter of the late Ellen Clinkscales and Walter Smith McDonald. Ellen was a graduate of the University of Georgia, an officer in the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, tutored French and was a member of the National Intercollegiate Archery Team. She was a long-standing member of the Cranford Book Club where she met with her much loved "sisters."
Ellen was active in community affairs serving on the Charlotte Symphony Board and assisted in the reactivation of the Charlotte Youth Symphony of which she was president for three years. She was also on the boards of Friends of Queens Library and Friends of the Mint and was a member of the Battle of Charlotte chapter of the DAR. Ellen's involvement at Myers Park United Methodist Church included 30 years in the choir, and service on the Altar Guild, Needlepoint Guild, and the Administrative Board. She treasured her membership in the Ownbey Sunday School class.
Ellen was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Alvin Leonard Chason, Jr. and her daughter, Katharine Honour Chason. Ellen is survived by her son, Walter McDonald "Chip" Chason, his wife, Joyce Dalby Chason and five grandchildren; Jared Knisley and his wife Talia, John Knisley and his wife, Faye and Ellen Riebow and her husband Matt, all of Tampa, Florida, Kimberly Shannon and her husband Scott of Clearwater, Florida, and Nicholas Chason and his wife Kalli of Portland Oregon. Ellen also had 14 great-grandchildren. The family will hold a private service on Saturday. Memorials may be sent to Myers Park United Methodist Church.
