Georgia Fotopoulos Athens, 84 of Charlotte, NC, passed away September 27, 2018 peacefully at home. She was born in Tourkoleka, Arkadia, Greece. She was a very kind hearted, loving, and generous person, but also a woman who met life's challenges with grit, achieving a better life for her and her family. She came with her family to America in 1967. She worked at Lance for 15 years and then for another 25 years alongside her husband, owner and operator of PJ’s Family Restaurant, where she was affectionately known as "Mama".
She enjoyed sewing and needlepoint, gardening and growing vegetables for family and neighbors. She was a fantastic cook.
She was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She was a loving mother and a wonderful grandmother who believed in caring for her family. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, and cooking lunch every Sunday for the entire family. She raised 4 children and helped raise another generation of grandchildren. Surviving are children Olga Kastanis and husband Paris, Pete Athens and wife Kim, Jimmy Athens and wife Lynn, George Athens and wife Krystal, and 9 grandchildren, Nikolas and John Kastanis, Aly, Kristin, Eddie, Preston, Zoe, Georgia and Christina Athens, and sister in laws Mahi Fotopoulos, Zoe Fotopoulos, Mary Foster and many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband John, and brothers Kostas of Atlanta, Theofilos and Panagiotis Fotopoulos of Charlotte, sister in law Georgia Kartsonis and Magdeline Asomekopoulos.
The viewing will be at 10 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2018 at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 600 East Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28203 and the Trisagion and funeral will start at 11 a.m. with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
