Glenn Burke Hackney Jr.
December 24, 1938 — February 5, 2026
Glenn Burke Hackney Jr., 87, of Charlotte, NC died Thursday, February 5, 2026 at home. Glenn was born December 24, 1938 in Guilford County and was a graduate of Greensboro Senior High.
He was born to the late Maxine Miller Hackney and Glenn Burke Hackney of Guilford County.
Glenn was preceded in his death by his loving wife of 34 years and devoted mother of his children, Joyce Page Hackney, his parents, Maxine and Glenn Hackney, and his sister, Barbara Michael. He is survived by his wife, Lynne Wells Hackney; his children, Trey Hackney of Jackson Hole, WY and Ashley Hackney Fogarty of Charlotte, NC and step-daughter, Louise Genetti and husband, Dimitri Genetti of Asheville, NC; his grandchildren Lily Fogarty and Zane Fogarty of Charlotte, NC and step-grandchild, Gia Genetti of Asheville, NC.
Glenn will be remembered for how he enjoyed his life to the fullest with his big smile, his electric blue eyes, satin white hair and his big personality. He loved his Ralph Lauren polos, his styrofoam coffee cups and his car magazines as much as he loved just riding around looking for a good deal. Beyond buying for just himself, he had a very generous heart that loved to provide for others and Glenn blessed many people in this lifetime.
For years Glenn was a luxury homebuilder in the Foxcroft community of Charlotte, NC before transitioning to commercial real-estate. Upon retirement he has thoroughly enjoyed seeing his daughter Ashley carry on the legacy of remodeling and flipping houses which brought him great pride and joy, second to being a very hands-on PaPa to Lily and Zane, who loved him very much.
Glenn was a proud 32° Scottish Rite Mason and a 50-year member of the A&A Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, SJ, USA with the Charles M.Setzer #0693 Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in Charlotte, NC. He was also a member of the AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America).
Glenn’s dominant hobby throughout life was being an avid classic car enthusiast from the age of 21 which lasted 6 decades of wheeling, dealing and negotiating at his favorite car shows including the annual Spring and Fall Carlisle and Hershey shows in Pennsylvania and the annual Run to the Sun car show in Myrtle Beach, SC. Among his car communities, dealerships and repeat customers Glenn will be remembered for his hunger for deals, his knack for knowing an automobiles’ full potential and his gift of witty hard-balling that would allow for even the best of salesmen to learn from him. Through the many cars he owned over the years, his favorites were his 1959 Red Impala convertibles.
Over the past two decades with his beloved wife, Lynne, Glenn embraced life through shared adventures — from building community at Sedgefield Apartments in Shelby, NC, to traveling the world, attending car shows, and showing up for special moments with all of his grandchildren. Their relationship was known and cherished by many for its deep affection, shared humor, and the way their differences complemented and balanced one another.
Those who knew Glenn will forever hear his voice in the simple truths he loved to share: “Everything is negotiable,” he would say with a knowing smile, and “People will remember the value of something long after they forget the price.” He leaves behind a trail of stories, a little mischief and more than a few people still negotiating because of him.
Visitation will be at 9am followed by the funeral service at 10am on Tuesday February 10, 2026 at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Home at 1111 East Blvd, Charlotte NC 28203. Graveside burial will follow at Norview Gardens Cemetery at 949 Pee Dee Ave in Norwood, NC 28128.
In honor of Glenn — who felt most like himself in jeans and his red polo — we invite guests to dress casually and comfortably. Red shirts, polos, and denim are warmly welcomed, but most of all, come as you are.
