Maurice Bernard Stuhrenberg

July 6, 1934 — November 12, 2025

Maurice Bernard Stuhrenberg, 91 years old, passed away on November 12, 2025, in Matthews, NC. He was born in Duncombe, Iowa, on July 6th, 1934, to the late Clem and Matilda Stuhrenberg, the fifth of eleven children, only three of whom are still living.

Maurice graduated from Duncombe Public school in 1952 and worked as a farm hand until joining the Army in 1955, which sent him to Stuttgart, Germany, as a police dispatcher and radio repairman. After his honorable discharge in 1957 he went to Chicago to attend DeVry Technical Institute for an associate degree in electronics. During this time, he met his future wife, Virginia. Upon graduating from DeVry, he worked in Alexandria, VA as an engineer for Farrington Electronics, transferring to Glendale, CA shortly after his marriage to Virginia in June of 1960. Three children (Susan, Andrew and James) were born to them in California. A fourth child (Carol) was born after a transfer back to VA when he was promoted to a regional manager, and the fifth and final child (Lynda) was born after a move to Charlotte, NC when his company was sold to Lundy Electronics. While working full-time to support his family, he completed his education at UNC Charlotte, earning a degree in Business Administration in 1979. A lifelong and faithful Catholic, Maurice attended and supported the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic church in Charlotte, including helping Virginia with her language and religious education programs there. He retired from Lundy Electronics in 1992 and remained in Charlotte until Virginia’s death in 2021, after which he moved to the Matthews Glen retirement community.

Maurice spent his life quietly and humbly doing whatever needed to be done, and he was exceptionally good at it. He designed and built furniture, electronics, and even the family’s first computer. He gardened, did yard work and maintained everything around the house including cars. If he couldn’t fix it, it wasn’t fixable. Always ready to lend a hand, he was also a kind and patient teacher of his many skills, and his wisdom was invaluable for those who knew to ask and listen. His love and care for his family was constant and selfless, and he in turn was loved and cherished and will be greatly missed.

Maurice is survived by his children Susan Collins and her husband Shad, Fr. James Stuhrenberg, Carol Phillips and her husband Barry, and Lynda Parillo and her husband Jay; his sisters Helen Rathouz, Marie Stuhrenberg, and Beth Lawler; and his grandchildren Ian Jameson, Amber Phillips, Matthew Phillips, Alexander Parillo, Jordan Parillo and Sophia Collins. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia and son Andrew.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, November 20th from 5-7 pm at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd. Charlotte. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 1:00 pm at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with the interment to follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Charlotte.
