Rita J Avakian

Rita Joyce Avakian, age 81, passed away on Monday, July 30, 2018 in Matthews North Carolina. Rita was a New York City public school teacher during the 1960's civil rights era. She did experimental education work at the time as well as taught special education. Her years teaching in both Harlem and Brooklyn, New York were some of her most memorable. She also worked for an extended period of time with her family in their import/export handmade wholesale rug business. Rita was preceded in death by her sister Susan Avakian, who is remembered for being loved and appreciated by many. Her later years in Charlotte were spent developing and enjoying interests previously unknown. Rita's wishes were to be cremated with no formal service.
