Ruby Naomi Smith

Ruby Naomi Smith, 87, went home to be with Our Lord on June 16, 2018. She was born in Rockingham, N.C., the ninth of ten children, to Rev. and Mrs. Marvin Smith. She graduated from Rockingham High School, Wingate University and Appalachian State University where she received a degree in music, with a concentration in piano performance. She taught music in the public schools of North Carolina, including Richmond County, and Whiteville, N.C. For over 30 years she taught music in Smith Junior High School in Charlotte, N.C. She was an active member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, at one time serving as accompanist. She was also active in the nursing home ministry until her health declined. Naomi was a devoted daughter, sister and aunt. As long as her health permitted, every aspect of her life centered around caring for family members. She cared for many family members, even while she worked full time. She was always available to care for a loved family member when the call came, no matter how busy she was. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, knitting and working the daily crossword puzzle. She excelled at each of these endeavors and anything she attempted to do. She loved to read through the Bible, and regularly kept us up to date on the book and chapter she was on. She was preceded in death by her Mother, Father, seven brothers and sisters, and our adopted sister Patsy. She leaves two sisters, Ruth Primm, of Greensboro, N.C. and Joann Hamilton, of Chesapeake, Virginia, nieces Beth Primm, Deborah Crayton, Melba Evans, nephews, Mark Edwards, Terry Burris, Smith Primm, Jim Primm, Paul Hamilton, Mark Hamilton and other relatives too numerous to mention. Our sister was blessed to have special neighbors, Michelle and family. The family wished to express our gratitude to neighbors Sheryl and Ragnor Gudlaugsson, for their loving and devoted care during the past several years. Their loving care enable Naomi to have a much better quality of life.
