Russell Alan Burrus

Russell Alan Burrus, 66, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, after a hard-fought and courageous battle with stage IV cancer and advanced heart failure. True to who he was, he faced it the same way he lived - head-on, with grit, humor, and an unwavering spirit.

Alan was born on January 22, 1960, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, while his father was completing his medical residency. He was the son of Maude “Sookie” Blanton Burrus and Dr. James Henry Burrus of Shelby, and grew up alongside his brothers, Chip and Erik, in a childhood full of adventure.

Alan was proud to grow up in Shelby, NC and that’s where his story really began. Weekends at Lake Norman with brothers and cousins, a teenage camping tour of the West, and even a solo cross-country biking adventure were just a few early signs that he was never meant to sit still. He was a standout football player for the Shelby High School Golden Lions, and, after being recruited by multiple schools, he chose to come full circle and play football at UNC-Chapel Hill, right back where his life began.  Alan was a four year letterman for the Tarheels and had the privilege of playing in and winning four bowl games during his time there.

Alan built a remarkable career in orthopedic trauma sales, spending 30 years with Synthes. He earned the company’s prestigious Founders Award in 2002 and was widely respected not just for his success, but for the way he poured into others, especially in teaching and mentoring resident surgeons. He didn’t just do his job well, he cared deeply about the people around him.

But work was only part of the story.

Alan was endlessly curious and passionate about the world. He loved tracking the weather, studying the stars, checking the stock market, finding the perfect hot dog or cheeseburger, and planning his next trip… because there was always a next trip. He was happiest when he had something to look forward to and people to share it with.

And that’s really what defined him: sharing life with others.

Nothing made Alan happier than having a house full of people, especially at the family’s place in Blowing Rock. He loved bringing people together, telling stories, laughing, and making everyone feel like they belonged. He had an easy way about him that put people at ease instantly. Time and again, people would say the same thing after meeting him: “He’s one of my favorite people I’ve ever met.” And they meant it.

He also shared deep bonds with his lifelong friends from Shelby, completing several marathons and triathlons together, making memories on their annual golf trip, and carrying those friendships through every stage of his life.

Alan’s greatest pride, though, was his family. Despite growing up in a house full of boys and a life rooted in sports, he was blessed with two daughters, Megan and Hayley, who changed his world.  When they were little, he was the ultimate girl dad who never hesitated to play with Barbies or attend a tea party hosted by his favorite girls.  His pride for their accomplishments and the women of faith and character they grew up to be was beyond measure.  Later came his five granddaughters, who brought him a kind of joy that was impossible to put into words.

In 2002, Alan met the love of his life Melissa, during a serendipitous trip to Bermuda. They married in 2008, and with that, Alan embraced becoming a father to Adrian and loved cheering him on as he played football at Charlotte Christian School and later at Colorado State University. Accompanying Adrian as he grew into an outstanding young man was a great joy in Alan’s life, and their close bond meant the world to both of them.

Together, Alan and Melissa built a life in Charlotte while remaining closely connected to family in Raleigh and Charleston. Alan and Melissa had many wonderful adventures going to football games, attending concerts, and traveling to places like Bora Bora, Bermuda, Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand.  Through the years, their partnership was marked by loyalty, love, laughter, faith and quiet strength, especially in later days when Melissa showed extraordinary selflessness as a devoted caretaker for her soulmate. Each summer, the entire family would gather for their beloved trip to Ocean Isle, a cherished tradition that became the backdrop for countless treasured memories with their children and grandchildren.

Alan is survived by his wife of 17 years, Melissa; his daughters, Megan Burrus Masters (husband Rob) and their children, Lawton Marie and Whitley Ann, and Hayley Burrus Rogers (husband Ted) and their daughters, Lila Mae, Sutton Elise, and June James; his stepson, Adrian Robinson (wife Katherine); his brothers, Chip Burrus (wife Sybil) and Erik Burrus (wife Beth); multiple nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of friends from all walks of life who felt more like family.

Alan will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his generosity, his deep love for people, his unbelievable kindness, and the way he made everyone feel seen, accepted, and included. He lived fully, loved deeply, and left a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to know him.

A celebration of Alan’s life will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Elevation Church Blakeney, 8835 Blakeney Professional Dr., Charlotte, NC 28277. In lieu of flowers, Alan requested that donations be made to the disaster relief organization Samaritan’s Purse.
