Cheryl Eva Shields
Jul 29, 1948 — Apr 8, 2026
Cheryl Eva Shields, lovingly known as Cher, passed away peacefully in her home on April 8, 2026. She was born on July 29, 1948, in Hollister, California, to Norma Lee Mills and Samuel Clinton. Cher spent her early years in Hilo, Hawaii, before returning to California in 1956.
Cher was a woman of remarkable intellect and determination. She earned degrees in Psychology and Law from the University of Hawaii, followed by a degree in Business Administration from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Her professional life was marked by dedication and integrity, including 30 years of service with the City of Salinas, where she retired as Director of General Services.
Cher shared a deep and abiding love with her husband, Kenneth Shields. They were lifelong companions until his passing on August 13, 2009—a loss Cher carried with grace and strength.
Community involvement was central to Cher's life. She served with passion and commitment on numerous boards and nonprofit organizations, including the Salinas Chamber of Commerce, Door to Hape, the United Nations, Monterey County Domestic Crisis Center, Salinas Women's Club, PG&E Junior Achievement Center, Salinas Employees Association, the California Public Purchasing Officers Association, and as a board member at Sherman Lakes Mobile Home Park, where she resided.
As a force of nature, Cher was easy to love and impossible to forget. Fiercely independent and razor-sharp, she possessed an enormous heart. Giving was one of her true passions and she was extraordinarily generous, always ready to lavish gifts, kindness, and support on loved ones and strangers alike. Her warm, larger-than-life personality allowed her to connect effortlessly with people from all walks of life.
Cher was deeply spiritual and steadfast in her faith. She loved Jesus, attended church regularly, and found daily comfort in reading the Bible, which remained by her bedside.
Food was another of Cher's great joys. As an exceptional cook, she delighted in hosting dinner parties and welcomed family, friends, and even newly met acquaintances into her home. Everyone was made to feel like the guest of honor.
Excellence in food was nonnegotiable, and Cher took immense pleasure in every thoughtfully prepared meal, right up to her final days. Known for her impeccable style, Cher was always polished and her hair was perfectly styled, makeup applied, and wardrobe chosen with flair. Her home reflected the same care and elegance: spotless, beautifully decorated for each season, and thoughtfully arranged as a place to gather and feel welcome.
Above all, Cher adored her doggies, her friends, and her family—often creating family wherever she went. Her trusting spirit and generosity led her to open her home to anyone in need, sometimes for as long as they required.
Cher's life journey was marked by love, compassion, resilience, and unwavering faith, even though profound pain. Her passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her.
She is survived by her beloved doggies, Molly and Max, along with nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of dear friends who will miss her beyond measure.
