Constance Diane Swain

Constance Diane Swain passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026. She was born on August 21, 1948, in Pacific Grove, California, to Albert II and Barbara Shoars. Though her given name was Constance, everyone knew and loved her simply as Connie.

Connie graduated from Monterey High School before beginning a life defined by love, family, hard work, and generosity. She met her husband, Harvey Swain, through her best friend, Rugena, and Rugena's future husband, Bill, who worked with Harvey. The two couples became lifelong friends and celebrated their marriages together in a double wedding ceremony on August 23, 1974. Harvey and Connie built a life together rooted in love, respect, and an unwavering commitment to one another.

When Connie and Harvey married, they blended their families from previous marriages into one. To those who knew them, however, there was never any distinction—only family. Connie and Harvey were true partners in every sense of the word. They faced life's challenges side by side, and approached situations as a team. Whether helping Harvey study for his General Contractor's license, tackling house projects together, or embracing ideas that were practical—or just a little crazy—they approached life as a team. Together they created a home filled with love, laughter, hard work and a shared belief that family always came first.

Connie's life was defined by an extraordinary work ethic. She worked for nearly 30 years at Monte Mart before retiring, only to begin a second career with the Salinas Union High School District. She and Harvey believed that success wasn't measured by wealth or status but by character. Through their example, they taught their children that honesty, kindness, integrity, compassion, and hard work were the qualities that mattered most.

Above all else, Connie was a devoted grandmother. Her greatest joy came from caring for the people she loved. Giving was her love language. If she discovered you liked something, there was a good chance it would appear on your doorstep the following week—often in quantities that suggested one could never have too much of a good thing. Every year, she delighted in buying an abundance of school supplies for her grandchildren, making sure they started each school year prepared. The family still laughs that thanks to Nana, they may never need to buy another pen, pencil, or eraser.

Connie also believed in the gift of education and the joy of reading. One of her favorite ways to spend a day was curled up in the family room beside the warmth of the wood-burning stove, completely absorbed in a romance or mystery novel. She passed that love of reading on to her daughters through weekly trips to the library, giving them a lifelong appreciation for books and learning.

Connie never sought recognition or attention. She found joy in quietly caring for others and making everyday life a little brighter. Her greatest legacy is not found in the things she owned or even the gifts she gave, but in the values she lived. She taught her family that being a good person is far more important than meeting society's definition of success. Her children and grandchildren carry forward her examples of kindness, generosity, perseverance, humility, and unconditional love.

Connie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harvey Swain; her son, Daniel Swain; her parents, Albert II and Barbara Shoars; and her sister, Althea "Allie" Villarreal.

She is lovingly remembered by her children, Bret (Jane) Swain, Michele (Richard) Balducci, Melissa Dunn, and Elizabeth (Keith) Swain-White; her brother, Albert "Bud" Shoars III; her cherished grandchildren, Jason and Alex Lara, Logan and Owen Dunn, Dylan, Kyle, and Tyler White, and Megan Varner; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

A funeral is planned for August 14, at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery at 10:00am.
