Jerome Michael Smith

Jerome Michael Smith passed away on July 22, 2026, at the age of 79. Beloved and cherished by all who knew him, Jerome lived a life defined by devotion to his faith, his family, his country, and his career.

The first of four children, Jerome was born in Leaksville, North Carolina on April 7, 1947, to Robert Clyde Smith, Sr. and Harriett Rodgers Smith. He is preceded in death by his parents and two of his grandchildren, Evan Maddox and Phillip Maddox. Their memories, along with Jerome's, are held dear in the hearts of all who knew and loved them.

Jerome, also affectionately known as Jerry or Papa, is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Glenda Royal Smith and his two devoted daughters, Deborah "Debbie" Harkness (Paul) and Rebecca "Becky" Maddox (Mickey); his grandchildren Hunter Harkness, Luke Culpepper, Annie Culpepper Hayes (Joshua), Aubrey Maddox (Nicole), Owen Maddox (Lucy); his many great grandchildren; his brothers George Early Smith, Robert Clyde Smith, Jr., Jeffery Allen Smith (Teresa); and a large extended family. The legacy Jerome leaves in each member of his family is deep and enduring.

Jerome proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. After leaving the Marine Corps, he embarked on a long and distinguished career as an Electronics Engineer at Robins Air Force Base where he was a part of groundbreaking defense work. His dedication and expertise were respected by colleagues, and his contributions left a lasting impression on the community and beyond. His patriotism was evident not only in his military service but also in the way he carried himself thereafter, embracing a lifelong love for his nation.

Beyond his roles in family, career, and service, Jerome's faith in Christ was central to his life. He was known for his unwavering commitment to sharing the message of Jesus, both through his words and by example. It was always important to Jerome to be a dedicated servant to any church of which he called himself a member, including his current church family at Lighthouse Baptist Church. Jerome sang in the choir for much of his church life while also serving as a deacon and leading Sunday School classes. His involvement with the Bus Ministry spanned 25 years, faithfully transporting and welcoming others into the fellowship he treasured so much. He also served Christ in his community as a member of the Gideons and as a mentor at local schools, guiding and encouraging young people.

Jerome found a lifelong passion in his love of sports. He was most passionate cheering for the UNC Tarheels and Atlanta Braves. In his younger years, he himself enjoyed playing baseball, softball, and basketball. Along with sports, he found great fulfillment in caring for his beloved four legged "children". He loved each dog dearly and treated them as cherished companions.

Above all, Jerome's life was built on love: for his family, his friends, and for the world around him. Those who knew him remember his warmth, his willingness to serve, his steadfast faith, and the joy he found in each day.

Visitation will be held on July 29, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Heritage Memorial Funeral Home & Crematory, located at 701 Carl Vinson Pkwy in Warner Robins, GA. A Celebration of Life Service in Jerome’s honor will take place on July 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Lighthouse Baptist Church, located at 1101 Dunbar Rd, in Warner Robins, GA. Interment will be immediately following at Parkway Memorial Gardens, located at 720 Carl Vinson Pkwy, Warner Robins, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request donations be made to Lighthouse Baptist Church. 

Jerome's life touched many, leaving a lasting mark on the family he adored, the colleagues he worked with, and the congregation he so faithfully served. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
