Kenneth Gary Smith
July 19, 1944 — November 3, 2024
Kenneth Gary Smith, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 3, surrounded by his devoted family. Born to Frances Early DeWeese Smith, Gary was raised in East Greenbush, NY, where he built a foundation of hard work, integrity and dedication that guided him throughout his entire life.
After graduating from Columbia High School and attending SUNY Albany, Gary enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1963. He served with distinction as an aircraft mechanic supervisor and later as a command post manager supporting Air Mobility operations across the globe. His military career spanned 35 years, including service in the United States Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and New York Air National Guard. During this time, Gary served on nearly every continent and in support of numerous global conflicts, retiring in 1998 with the esteemed rank of Senior Master Sergeant.
Gary was a man of many talents—he was a skilled carpenter, artist, clockmaker, car mechanic, soccer coach and fisherman. These passions allowed him to express his creativity and resourcefulness, qualities his family and friends deeply admired.
Gary resided in East Schodack, NY, and Waterford, NY, before moving to Florida, where he and his family made a new home.
He is survived by his loving wife, Alicia Anderson Smith, and his children: Veronica Spaight and husband Edward of Inverness, FL; Col (Ret) David Smith and wife Kerry of Spotsylvania, VA; Dr. William Smith and wife Carly of Harleysville, PA; and Derek Wimble and wife Allison of Brooklyn, NY. He was the proud grandfather of Lindsay Clare Spaight, Marcus Smith, Luke Smith, Suzie Spaight, Elliot Smith, Russell Smith, and Mackenzie Smith.
Gary is also survived by his brother, William DeWeese and wife Kathy of West Sand Lake, NY, as well as his cherished niece, nephew, and their children and grandchildren. His legacy of love and dedication will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A service to honor and celebrate Gary's life will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Save the Manatee at savethemanatee.org or America’s Vet Dogs at vetdogs.org, causes that were meaningful to Gary.
