Russell John Maurice Sturgeon
January 24, 1939 — April 12, 2015
John Sturgeon passed away on Sunday April 12, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada of Liver Cancer at the age of 76. He was born in Sherman, Kentucky on January 24, 1939. He married Joan Hatten on June 8, 1957 in Dry Ridge, Kentucky. They moved to Nevada in 1960. He was a 50 year resident of Pahrump. John rose to the position of Past Grand Master of his local Masonic Lodge. John spent his early career with the Irby Co. bringing some of the first electricity to rural Nevada. He lived first in Lathrop Wells then Indian Springs before settling in Pahrump. John eventually found himself at the Nevada Test Site as a material control agent for REECo. John spent the final few years of his career at the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository where he got to witness the massive drill make its Historic exit from the mountain after several years of drilling. In early retirement he spent his time working with his two daughters at Kaye's Allstate Insurance Company in Pahrump. He and Joan also operated the Family bookstore, The Bookworm Haven where John spent his days on the porch soaking up the sun with a good book. The family spent summers in Soldotna, Alaska where they loved to fish for Salmon. Over the years they made 27 trips along the Historic ALCAN Highway. John is survived by his wife Joan of 58 years, his Daughters Kaye (Dave) and Melodie both of Pahrump. Grandchildren Jessica Valdes (Matt). Bryan Eleogram and Ally Eleogram of Las Vegas, Great Grandson Ian Hollibush. His sister In-law Rose Fields of Colorado Springs, Colorado and his niece Lisa Kronberg (Seymour) their four children Cassie, Zack, Jessie, and Samantha. And Gary Eleogram of Pahrump. There will be a celebration of John's life on Saturday April 25th at 920 5th Street in Pahrump from Noon to 6:00 p.m. In Lieu of Flowers donations can be made to Cancer Closets located at the "At Your Finger Tips" salon located on Postal Way in Pahrump. »(Do not delete this line.
