Bernadine Pokoj Stofanik
March 26, 1936 - May 30, 2025
At 90 years of age Bernadine passed peacefully surrounded by her family.
Bernie, as she was called, was the 11th child of Joseph and Rosalie Pokoj. She was born and raised in Hamtramck Michigan along with her six sisters, Kitty, Jean, Ann, Theresa, Dolores, Rosalie and her four brothers Cass, John, Edward and Joseph.
At sixteen she started dating John Stofanik. They were married on August 27, 1955. Together for over 70 years. She was the loving mother of Rosalie (Andy) Ostrowski, Susan Shepack, the late John Stofanik and the late Christine Anthony. Proud grandmother of Brian, Michael, Sarah, Nicholas, Taylor and Jennifer. Great grandmother to Brayden and Ellery.
As a team, her and Dad owned three businesses; the Midtown Bar in Hamtramck, Chucks Goodtime Candy in South Lake Tahoe and then two Monk's Pizza locations also in Lake Tahoe.
At 50 years old Bernie and John moved to Sacramento, CA. Mom decided to leave the food service businesses. She took computer classes and worked a couple of different office jobs. She ended her work career as an executive secretary for Sacramento County at the Sacramento International Airport.
After retirement Mom enjoyed traveling with Dad and spending time with family. She also volunteered at the Polish American Club of Sacramento, planned events for her Eastern Gardens community and of course Bingo Bernie always enjoyed playing Bingo, Poker Slots and cards.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow. I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I have savored much, family, friends, good times, a loved one's touch.
God wanted me now. He set me free!
