Karen Elaine Sturm

February 11, 1942 — June 10, 2025

Karen Elaine Sturm, 83, of Maricopa, Arizona, whose radiant smile and boundless kindness touched all who knew her, entered the loving embrace of those who went before her, including her beloved husband, Albert, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. She passed away peacefully in hospice care after her courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease, with her loving daughter by her side.

Born in Meservey, Iowa, on February 11, 1942, to Johannas V. and Vergena A. (Bonte) Pals, Karen was raised on the family farm, learning the values of hard work and close family ties. In 1958, she met Albert Lee Sturm at the Belmond skating rink. Their love story began that night, and they were married at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, Iowa, on August 8, 1959. Karen and Albert were blessed with two sons and a daughter and lived in Meservey, Belmond, and Hampton before settling on their acreage in Geneva, Iowa, in 1973. Karen dedicated several years to Acco Seed Company, then worked at the Geneva Locker until its closing, and later at Franklin General Hospital until her retirement at age 65. In 2013, Karen and Albert moved to Maricopa, Arizona, to enjoy their retirement years.

Karen delighted in watching her grandchildren's activities, celebrating each milestone and her radiant smile brightened every family gathering and card game. She also cherished her time spent crocheting, baking delicious treats, and enjoyed the occasional exciting trip to the casino. Many will remember her cheerful presence at the Maricopa Community Center, where she loved playing Canasta with friends. Karen will be remembered as the kindest and sweetest lady, with the most caring smile, a true gift to everyone who knew her. She was the best grandmother a grandchild could wish for, always excited to plan activities with them. Even though Alzheimer's slowly stole her memories, her smile and giggle remained, a testament to her enduring spirit.

Karen is survived by her children, Gene (Mona) Storm and Rachel (Matthew) Catherman; her sister, Vivian Swanson; her sister-in-law, Sharon Pals; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Albert Sturm; her son, Ricky Sturm; her parents, Johannas V. and Vergena A. (Bonte) Pals; her sister, Margie Thompson; and her brother, Jimmie Pals. Karen will be deeply missed by her remaining family and friends.
