Hector Rodriguez Nieves

Hector “Papa Cano” Rodriguez Nieves, 86, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on May 5, 1940, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Hector was the beloved son of Inocencia Nieves Rodriguez and Felipe Rodriguez Gonzalez and the second oldest of nine siblings.

Hector and Aurelia “Yeya” Soto first met in Puerto Rico before later reconnecting in New York, where their love story began. The two later married and built a beautiful life together while raising their children, Karen Cintron and Hector Rodriguez Jr. Hector is now reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Yeya, and his son Hector Jr.

Hector spent most of his life in Queens, New York, before moving to Tampa, Florida, in 2015 with his daughter and son-in-law to be closer to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the center of his world.

He proudly served in the Army National Guard of Puerto Rico. A hardworking and dedicated man, Hector was the proud owner of two stores with his wife and also worked as a Plant Manager for U.S. Truck Body in Long Island City, New York, for over 38 years.

Known as the handyman of the family, Cano loved woodworking, boxing, baseball, music, his scratch-offs, and always playing the lotto. More than anything, he loved his family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

He leaves behind his loving daughter, Karen Cintron, and spouse Joe Cintron; his grandchildren, Karen Lisette Matos and spouse Miguel Matos, and Andy Jorge Salazar; his great-grandchildren, Jonathan Jairo Montoya and spouse Ally Montoya, Kayla Lee Montoya and fiancé Diosmar Barreiro, Scarlet Jolee Salazar, Arianna Jolee Matos, Aaliyah Jolee Salazar, and Jaxon Shea Salazar; his great-great-grandson AJ, lovingly called “Lito” by Papa, as the family also awaits the arrival of Kayla and Diosmar’s baby girl.

He also leaves behind three sisters, Gladys, Millie, and Lucy; three brothers, Johnny, Willie, and Carlitos; many loving nieces, nephews, and Godchildren who will forever cherish his memory.

Hector also leaves behind his loyal companion, Sergeant, the family dog who rarely left his side.

Hector “Papa Cano” Rodriguez Nieves will forever be remembered for his strength, wisdom, kind heart, and how much of a gentleman he was.

Forever loved. Forever missed.

A Visitation is scheduled for Friday, June 5, 2026 at 5:00pm with the Service starting at 6:00pm at Loyless Funeral Home, 5310 Land O' Lakes Boulevard, Land O' Lakes, Florida 34639.

Hector “Papa Cano” Rodriguez Nieves, de 86 años, falleció pacíficamente el 13 de mayo de 2026, rodeado del amor de su familia.

Nació el 5 de mayo de 1940 en San Juan, Puerto Rico. Hector fue el amado hijo de Inocencia Nieves Rodriguez y Felipe Rodriguez Gonzalez, y el segundo mayor de nueve hermanos.

Hector y Aurelia “Yeya” Soto se conocieron por primera vez en Puerto Rico antes de reencontrarse más tarde en Nueva York, donde comenzó su historia de amor. Luego se casaron y construyeron una hermosa vida juntos mientras criaban a sus hijos, Karen Cintron y Hector Rodriguez Jr. Ahora Hector se reúne en el Cielo con su amada esposa, Yeya, y su hijo Hector Jr.

Hector pasó la mayor parte de su vida en Queens, Nueva York, antes de mudarse a Tampa, Florida, en 2015 junto a su hija y yerno para estar más cerca de sus nietos y bisnietos, quienes eran el centro de su mundo.

Sirvió con orgullo en la Guardia Nacional del Ejército de Puerto Rico. Hombre trabajador y dedicado, Hector fue orgulloso dueño de dos tiendas junto a su esposa y también trabajó como gerente de planta para U.S. Truck Body en Long Island City, Nueva York, durante más de 38 años.

Conocido como el “manitas” de la familia, a Cano le encantaba la carpintería, el boxeo, el béisbol, la música, sus raspaditos y siempre jugar la lotería. Más que nada, amaba a su familia y amigos y siempre estaba dispuesto a tender una mano a cualquiera que lo necesitara.

Deja atrás a su amada hija, Karen Cintron, y a su esposo Joe Cintron; sus nietos, Karen Lisette Matos y su esposo Miguel Matos, y Andy Jorge Salazar; sus bisnietos, Jonathan Jairo Montoya y su esposa Ally Montoya, Kayla Lee Montoya y su prometido Diosmar Barreiro, Scarlet Jolee Salazar, Arianna Jolee Matos, Aaliyah Jolee Salazar y Jaxon Shea Salazar; y su tataranieto AJ, cariñosamente llamado “Lito” por Papa, mientras la familia también espera con alegría la llegada de la bebé de Kayla y Diosmar.

También deja atrás a tres hermanas, Gladys, Millie y Lucy; tres hermanos, Johnny, Willie y Carlitos; además de muchos sobrinos, sobrinas y ahijados que siempre atesorarán su memoria.

Hector también deja atrás a su fiel compañero, Sergeant, el perro de la familia que rara vez se separaba de su lado.

Hector “Papa Cano” Rodriguez Nieves será recordado por siempre por su fortaleza, sabiduría, noble corazón y por el gran caballero que fue.

Siempre amado. Siempre extrañado.
