Joseph Francis Houdart, Jr.
January 17, 1943 — May 21, 2026
Joseph Francis Houdart, Jr., of West Deptford, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026.
Born and raised in Salem, New Jersey, Joe was the beloved son of the late Joseph F. Houdart, Sr. and Agnes Houdart (née Keaburtz). He grew up in a close-knit family where kindness, generosity, and compassion were not only taught, but lived every day. The Houdart family owned and operated Houdart Market in Salem for many years, and all of the children worked alongside their parents serving the community. Joe especially carried with him the lesson that helping others mattered more than anything, often recalling how his family quietly assisted neighbors who were struggling to afford groceries. That spirit of generosity remained with him throughout his life.
Joe was a proud graduate of Saint Joseph's University and remained a devoted “Golden Hawk” throughout his life. Inspired by his love of learning, he dedicated his career to education and became a teacher who left a lasting impression on generations of students. He began his teaching career in the Oakwood Beach school system before continuing his work in the Cherry Hill school district, where he formed many lifelong friendships with former students and colleagues alike. To so many, Joe was far more than a teacher — he was a mentor, a source of encouragement, and someone who truly cared.
Joe’s legacy extends far beyond the classroom. A talented craftsman, he found great joy in refinishing furniture and working with his hands. He was deeply passionate about environmental conservation and proudly served as a member of the Plumsted Township Environmental Commission in New Egypt, New Jersey. Through his work there, Joe helped educate students and community members about environmental stewardship and the importance of conservation in everyday life. He believed strongly that caring for the earth was everyone’s responsibility, and he worked tirelessly to inspire others to share that belief. Those who knew Joe knew him as an honest, thoughtful, and endlessly interesting man. He had a gift for conversation and a genuine curiosity about people and the world around him. Recently, Joe participated in an interview with David Fleisher, a conversation that will be broadcast in the near future. Though he did not have the opportunity to hear it himself, the interview stands as yet another reflection of the meaningful and impactful life he lived.
Joe shared a beautiful love story with his wife of 60 years, Gwendolyn “Gwen” H. Houdart (née Harris). The two first met at a school dance when Gwen confidently approached Joe and asked him to dance. That simple moment became the beginning of a lifetime filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Together they traveled the world, exploring destinations throughout Europe, Africa, and beyond, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Gwen; his sons, Joseph and Christopher Houdart; and his beloved grandson, Zachery Houdart. He is also survived by his dear sister, Agnes Mary Drozed, and was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Olejarski. In addition to his family, Joe leaves behind many cherished friends, former students, and countless lives touched by his kindness and wisdom.
