Joanne M. Scanlon

April 12, 1932 — April 14, 2013

Monterey- Died peacefully at home with her family. Born and raised in a founding family of the Monterey sardine fleet, she always put her family ahead of her own needs and wants. After her marriage, she traveled the world as a diplomat?s wife developing an abiding interest in politics and world affairs, all the while never losing her child-like sense of play. Curiosity had her looking for the good in every culture she experienced and incorporating those qualities into her being and philosophy of life. The consummate hostess to diplomats and world leaders, family and friends, she shared her love of good food at her own table and in the gifts she sent out every holiday. Something tasty was always waiting on the counter in her kitchen. Knitting and reading occupied her free time and provided those she loved with warm blankets and sweaters. She was a champion of the needy through these craft projects and her life membership in the Lion?s Eye Foundation of California and Nevada. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Thomas; sister, Irene (Francis) Ingraham of Salinas; children: Mary (Stephen) Greenfield, Anne, Thomas (Lynn), Patrick (Jane) and Michael (Paula); grandchildren: Rebecca, Kimberley, Michaela, Christopher, Kristen Booth; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their profound gratitude to Hospice of the Central Coast. A Memorial Mass will be held 10 AM, Thursday, April 25, 2013 at San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donation to the Lion?s Eye Foundation of California and Nevada, Inc. P.O. Box 7999, San Francisco, CA 94120 or the charity of the donor?s choice.
