It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Donald E. Harris, on October 24, 2024, at the age of 91. Don was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to so many. His life was a testament to dedication, kindness, and unwavering support for those around him.

Don was born on April 16, 1933, in Boicourt, Kansas.  Don enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953, where he proudly served in Japan, Germany, Korea, and Vietnam. Don was awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. He worked tirelessly, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues. After retiring from the U.S. Army in 1976 Don went to work for the U.S. Civil Service at the Defense Language Institute, in Monterey, until his retirement in 1994. Don completed is BA while attending night school at Chapman University, in Monterey, CA.

Don met his Irish wife of 61 years, Sarah Harris, while stationed in Göppingen, Germany. Together, they raised 4 children, instilling in them the same values of compassion and determination that defined Don’s character.

Don’s passions extended beyond his professional and family life. He was an avid Fisherman, and diehard Kansas City Chiefs and Saint Louis Cardinals fan.  Don and Sarah enjoyed traveling having visited most of western Europe and all 48 states in the continental US.  Don was actively involved in multiple Veteran organizations. He believed in giving back and worked tirelessly to make a positive impact on the lives of others. His generosity and spirit of service were felt by many.

Don was a devoted family man, always placing his loved ones at the center of his world. He leaves behind a family who adored him. Don is survived by wife Sarah, his children Thomas of Monterey, CA, Edith (Mike Dutra) of Portland, OR, Tim of San Francisco, CA, and Don Jr of Marina, CA, and daughter-in-law Tammie, Quincy, WA. Don had four loving grandchildren, Devin, Camron, Alyssa, and Andrew, and three great-grandchildren.  Don was preceded in death by his eldest son Russ of Quincy, WA. Although he is no longer with us, Don’s spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
