Darrell William Snyder
May 11, 1940 — May 13, 2026
Darrell W. Snyder was a deeply loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, social worker, and friend. Born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he moved to Eugene in 1943 and called it home. He loved the outdoors, especially the Oregon coast. Known for his kindness, humor, and optimism, he touched many lives through both his personal and professional relationships.
Darrell attended the University of Utah, earning a Master’s Degree in Social Work in 1971. He worked for the State of Oregon as a licensed clinical social worker for more than 40 years and continued providing counseling and crisis support throughout Oregon until just months before he passed away.
Darrell was active in the Catholic Church and volunteered with the Men’s Club and for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, while also participating in a weekly Bible study. He was a talented all-around athlete, which earned him the nickname “Duke,” after Duke Snider of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Our own all-star, “Duke Snyder with a Y,” also loved music, playing guitar and singing throughout his life. His wife, Janet, is a gifted pianist, and together they enjoyed playing music together over many years of marriage. In his later years, Darrell became an avid reader and especially enjoyed the lively discussions of his monthly book club.
He is survived by his wife, Janet (Mathisen); children Angela “Angie” Snyder, Mark Snyder, and Allison “Allie”and son-in-law, Sam Lonberg; and granddaughters Mollie and Gracie Lonberg. Darrell and Janet would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 13, 2026.
A Funeral Mass and reception will be held June 23 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church.
