Shirley Jean Scrugham

Jul 27, 1939 — Jun 29, 2026

Shirley Jean Grant Scrugham, 86, ended a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Monday, June 29, 2026, in Colorado. She was born on July 27, 1939, in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Ira Luther and Alma Marie (Gampfer) Grant. She married Robert Allen Scrugham on February 14, 1959; he preceded her in death on February 14, 2022.

Shirley is survived by her three children: Laura Carole (Joslin) Scrugham of Ohio, Allene Ruth Scrugham Gottlinger of Colorado, and Curtis Robert Scrugham and his wife Kristi Scrugham of Colorado. She has seven grandsons: Robert Joslin (who proceeded her in death on February 9, 2021), and is survived by Christopher Gottlinger, Grant Joslin, Matthew Joslin, Michael Gottlinger, Andrew Joslin, and Kyle Scrugham. She is also survived by one great-grandson, Lyle Joslin. She was one of five siblings. Carole (Grant) Craft proceeded her in death; she is survived by Linda Grant, Pamela Grant, and Robert Grant and his wife Wanda.

Shirley was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up down the street from her husband to be. She graduated from Withrow High School. After marriage, Bob and Shirley moved around the country as the USAF saw fit. They settled in Marietta, Georgia when Bob retired from active duty; they resided there for over 50 years. Shirley was a devoted servant of Faith Lutheran Church in Marietta and was very involved with children’s ministries. She believed and lived in family first; it was important for her to be at home for her children’s early years. When she returned to work after her children were settled in school, she worked as a secretary part-time for a number of years at local real estate and law offices.

Shirley was a sweet, kind, gentle loving soul. She was an amazing wife and mother; she was always there if you needed her. Shirley built a solid foundation for her family. She enjoyed traveling that was centered around her siblings, children, and grandchildren. The home usually had at least one family pet; Shirley was partial to dogs – big working dogs. She loved flowers, sudoku puzzles, and quiet lunches with close friends.

Her smile, laughter, and joy for life will be sorely missed. Our grief is buffered by the knowledge that she is now reunited with Bob, that she continues to live on in the hearts of those she touched, and that she’ll be watching over us from above.
