Michael John Cody

July 29, 1951 — June 5, 2026

Michael John Cody, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Communication at the University of Southern California's (USC) Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, passed away on June 5, 2026, in Davenport, Florida. He was 74 years old.

Born on July 29, 1951, in Citrus Heights, CA, Cody was the fourth of six children to James and Grace Cody. He graduated from San Juan High School, then California State University Sacramento, and finally went on to earn his doctorate from Michigan State University, where his passion for understanding how people connect, persuade, and influence one another took root, a passion that would define a remarkable academic career spanning more than four decades.

He joined the faculty at USC in 1982 as an Assistant Professor and rose to the rank of full Professor in 1991, a position he held until his retirement. Over the course of his career, he became one of the most widely respected communication scholars in the country, teaching and conducting research in interpersonal communication, nonverbal behavior, persuasion, and entertainment-education. His work consistently bridged the academic and the practical, bringing insights from communication science to bear on real-world challenges in public health, social change, and human relationships.

A prolific author and editor, Michael co-authored multiple books and his journal articles appeared in leading publications across the fields of communication, health, and social psychology. His research grants supported important work in tobacco control, energy conservation, and autism understanding.

In recognition of his scholarly leadership, Cody served as Editor-in-Chief of two of the field's most prestigious journals: Communication Theory (1999–2002) and the Journal of Communication (2009–2011). He was affiliated with USC's Norman Lear Center and was deeply committed to graduate mentorship, an influence recognized by USC's Mellon Award for Faculty and Graduate Student Mentoring in 2011.

Beyond academia, he was an avid gardener, movie enthusiast and loved to spend time with his family and friends. He took genuine pride in tending his plants and growing all types of fruit and produce that he would share with friends and neighbors. He delighted in the art of storytelling on screen and was always eager to discuss tv and movies and share his favorites. Above all, Michael was devoted to his daughter, Julia, his granddaughter, Kit, and all his family and friends who brought him immeasurable happiness. He cherished every family trip, every dinner out, and every game of dominos.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Grace Cody, and his younger brothers, William Cody and James Cody. He is survived by his siblings Patrick Cody, Sally Bunce and Mary Cody, his daughter, Julia Walkup and her mother Margaret McLaughlin, his granddaughter, Kit Walkup and her father Ward Gale Walkup IV, his niece Angela Brown and her daughters Sarah Gavrilyuk and Grace Brown, and his nephew James Bunce and his son Noah Bunce.
