Phyllis Karean "Kay" Southern

Mrs. Phyllis Karean “Kay” Southern, age 77, departed this earth on Thursday, May 21, 2026, to be with her Heavenly Father.

Kay was born January 16, 1949, in Quiet Dell, West Virginia to the late Edwin and Margaret Egleson. After graduating from high school, she became the loving and devoted wife to John Henry Southern on August 27, 1966.

In addition to her parents, Kay was preceded in passing by her brothers Eddie Egleson and Bobby Egleson and her grandson Latham Garrett Southern.

Mrs. Southern was a true servant of the Lord. She attended Kerwin Baptist Church for many years where she was very active on bus routes, visiting elders, shut-ins and the sick, along with Bible study groups and functions in church. She also volunteered delivering Meals-on-Wheels for several years. Her hobbies included sewing and making quilts for her granddaughter.

Special “thank you” to her neighbors, the Knight family, the Lawson family and Lequita Smith for all their support and help during the past few months.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 59 years, John Henry Southern; her sons, Jon Marshall Southern (Rebecca) and Jason Matthew Southern (Amber); and one amazing granddaughter, Adelynn Elise Southern.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 26th at 11:00 AM, officiated by Pastor Daniel Hawtree, at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Service, 213 West Mountain Street, Kernersville, NC, with visitation from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM at the funeral home. Burial with committal service will be in Walkertown Gardens of Memory Cemetery at 12:45 PM.

In lieu of flowers, Kay’s family has requested donations be made directly to Kerwin Baptist Church, 4520 Old Hollow Road, Kernersville, NC 27284.
