Susan Jean Sorlien

September 20, 1948 — April 30, 2026

With a heavy heart, our beloved, Susan Jean Sorlien, 77 of Parker, Colorado, passed away at home on April 30, 2026, after a 3-year courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Susan was born on September 20, 1948, to John and Doris Van Horn in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She attended Humboldt High School, where she met Ronald (Ron) Alan Sorlien at a local dance (teen hop). Sue went on to study at Fort Dodge Community College and then continued to the University of Northern Iowa to study Elementary Special Education. After graduation, she began her teaching career at Taft Elementary and St. Mary’s Elementary in Humboldt, Iowa. Ron and Sue were married in 1970 and had their first child, Amy, in 1975, followed by Ann in 1979. A career opportunity for Ron spurred a move out west to Colorado in 1982, which led to Sue’s second career in Customer Relations at General Motors Acceptance Corporation. She took early retirement in 1999. Sue found being idle quite hard to do, which led to her third career working for the City of Greenwood Village, and then as Deputy Town Clerk for the Town of Parker, where she started the records management system for the town. Sue retired in 2015. Not quite done, Sue began working part-time issuing passports for the City of Centennial for the next 4 years.

Sue will be remembered for her kind and loving spirit, her joyful nature, and the great pride she took in her family. Her greatest joy was cheering on her children and grandchildren at their sporting events, while also enjoying college and professional basketball, tending to her flowers and garden, playing cards with friends, and taking road trips across the country with Ron, especially to his Army reunions. Her warmth, support, and love for those around her will be dearly missed.

Sue is survived by her husband, Ron, of Parker, Colorado; daughter and son-in-law Amy and Shane Feiman, and their two children, Samuel and Maxwell, of Centennial, Colorado; daughter and son-in-law Ann and Kevin Krebs, and their three children, Charlie, Cameron, and Cailey, of Purcellville, Virginia. Sue’s sisters are Diane Messerly of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Shelley Gagnier of Humboldt, Iowa. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, John and Doris (Meyer) Van Horn, and her brother James Allen Van Horn.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Sue’s memory to I AM ALS.

Funeral services for Sue will be held at Ave Maria Catholic Church in Parker, Colorado, with burial to follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
