One with the trees...

Richard A. Balcitis, 71, passed away on July 17, 2025, in Peoria Arizona, with family by his side. He was born on September 13, 1953, in Rockford, Illinois, to Albert and Birgit Balcitis.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Judy Balcitis; his beloved children, Megan (Dan) Valentine, Heather (Daxx) Nielsen, and Garret (Rachel) Balcitis; and his adored grandchildren, Mariah, Stasia, and Micah Valentine; Iver and Sigge Nielsen; and Tristan and Emery Balcitis. He also leaves behind his sister, Loretta Freier, and brother, Lew Balcitis.

Richard retired after 34 years with Collins Aerospace in Illinois. Known for his calm yet playful spirit and thoughtful nature, he was a great listener and was often described as a philosopher—ready with just the right words or bit of wisdom. He was the best dad, an incredible Papa to his grandchildren, and a truly wonderful friend to many.

He loved a great summer day listening to music by his pool, and was a lifelong fan of the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears. Richard also loved spending time outdoors. Nature brought him peace, he spent much of his life tending to his corner of the world in his yard, speaking often of being “one with the trees.” He found great wonder in the world around him, and it brought him deep joy to share that same wonder and awe with his children. He nurtured in them a spirit of curiosity and compassion, encouraging them to explore not only the world around them but also the world within.

Richard’s faith was his foundation. He loved God’s word and found comfort, strength, and joy in scripture and song. Whether singing a favorite hymn or quietly praying, he carried a deep, steady trust in God throughout his life.

A celebration of life will be planned for later this year in Rockford.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Anderson Japanese Garden, 318 Spring Creek Rd., Rockford, IL 61107.
