John Sandoval

November 11, 1925 — November 13, 2019

John Sandoval, age 94 of Santa Fe, NM went peacefully with our Lord on Wednesday, November 13, 2019. He had just celebrated his 94th birthday on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11. John was born in Estancia, NM to Emilio and Carolina Sandoval. He was the last of five brothers and a half-sister. John was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Alberta Sandoval; his parents, Emilio and Carolina Sandoval; brothers Mike A. Sandoval, Julian Sandoval, Leo Sandoval, Joe Sandoval; sister, Mary Tapia and grandson Jonathan Montoya. John graduated from Estancia High School in 1944. He then enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II in Germany as a Private First-Class Ammunition Handler. He also served in the Korean War, with an honorable discharge in 1952. On April 10, 1948, he married Alberta Duran of Albuquerque. They moved to Los Alamos where he worked for the Zia Company. He later moved to Santa Fe and started working for the Los Alamos National Laboratory in Graphic Arts until his retirement in 1987. He would enjoy going fishing to Pecos with his brother Mike. He also, along with his wife, enjoyed their early morning walks along with their fellow "mall walker" friends, more for the coffee and company/conversation than for the exercise. He would also occasionally visit with his other brother Leo, who usually did most of the talking as he once said that "John was a man of few words". In 2005, he and Alberta moved to Rio Rancho for several years. After his wife's passing in 2011, he lived for a period of time in Espanola, eventually moving back to Santa Fe to live out his remaining years. John is survived by son Gerald Sandoval, wife Bertha; daughter Barbara Lopez, husband Joe; daughter Rita Romero; grandchildren Stephanie, husband Mark; Andrew, wife Michelle; Edward, wife Darlene; Carol and Becca, husband Eddie; great grandchildren Dominic, Allyson, Kailee, Eric, Marisol, Jonathan Jr., Raymond, Santiago, Santos, Brea and Rocco along with many nieces and nephews.
