Richard George Benavidez Sr.
September 1, 1951 — April 13, 2026
Richard George Benavidez was born September 1, 1951 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was peacefully called home on April 13, 2026. He was the eldest son of Espiridion and Escolastica Benavidez. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Baby Patricia and Patricia Balderrama, nephews Gil Balderrama Jr. and Jesse Ray Ruiz. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Anita V. Zitano Benavidez. He is also survived by seven children, Sandra (Phillip)Gaiser, Yvonne (Joseph) Benavidez, Richard Jr., Joseph (Sylvia), Michael, David (Alyssa) and Marita, 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his brothers David(Martha), James (Bonnie), Ron (Genevieve), sisters Doreen Benavidez and Diane (Mike)Hanson and countless nieces and nephews.
He proudly followed in his father’s footsteps in his employment with Arizona Public Service for 20 years working as an electrical engineering designer. His professional success in this field included developing projects which supplied power across the valley. This allowed him to be a loving provider for his family.
He was most known for his music. Rick was a skilled and extremely accomplished guitarist. His love of Jazz was overwhelming, and he never stopped studying, learning and perfecting his skills. Countless musicians can say they can play the guitar; Rick stood among a very elite group of guitarists and musicians. When he played the guitar the instrument became an extension of his incredible talent and passion that only music can bring about. And the outcome was beautiful to the ear and heart to all who were fortunate to see and hear him play.
While he had a deep passion for music, he held a deeper passion for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved very much. His love and affection extended beyond his immediate family, opening his heart and home to countless friends and family. Although his physical presence will be greatly missed by all, his love and legacy will continue in their hearts forever.
