Barney McCoy Metts Jr.
August 23, 1939 — April 30, 2026
With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for his life, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Barney McCoy Metts, Jr., at the age of 86, surrounded by his cherished family. Born in the beautiful city of Charleston, South Carolina, Barney's journey through life was a tapestry of love, service, and joy, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Barney was the devoted son of the late Barney McCoy Metts, Sr. and Lurline Dukes Metts. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Thomas and Beatrice Dukes of Charleston, and Thomas Marion Metts and Rosa Isabel Dukes Metts of St. George, as well as his dear sister, Frances L. Castamore. Best friend of over 70 years Carey Davis of Charleston, SC. Though they are no longer with us, their spirits surely welcomed him with open arms.
Barney's life was filled with love, shared with his longtime companion of 20 years, Linda Shelley. He is survived by his sons, Dennie T. and Gabrelle Metts of Ravenel, SC and Richard and Jennifer Faison of Cannady, SC, who carry forward his legacy of warmth and kindness. His loving sibling, Merry Metts DuPuis of Charleston, remains to celebrate his life along with his cherished grandchildren, Zita Duprey of Moncks Corner and David Duprey of Goose Creek, as well as his precious great-grandchild, Izabella Jurey of Moncks Corner.
Barney's extended family includes his nephews, John T. Hnatishion of Los Angeles, CA, and Robert "Bubba" and Annie Hnatishion of Seneca, SC, and his nieces, Cindy and Chris High of Iowa City, IA, and Andrea and Ron Whilden of James Island. His great-nephew, Ron and Christina Whilden of Raleigh, NC, and numerous cousins throughout South Carolina also share in the mourning of his loss and the celebration of his life.
Barney was a proud graduate of James Island high school and served his country with honor in the US Navy Reserves from 1956 to 1957 before transferring to the US Air Force. His career began with dedicated service as a police officer for the City of Charleston, later advancing to the role of Detective with Charleston County, where he retired in 1984. His entrepreneurial spirit shone as he owned and operated several furniture stores in North Charleston over two decades, and he was a respected auctioneer for 30 years.
Barney's life was richly filled with passion and hobbies. A lover of Bluegrass music, he was known for pickin’ his banjo, mandolin, and guitar, often seen gracing the local Guitar Center with his presence. An accomplished certified scuba diver, his love for the sea extended to boating and fishing, often accompanied by his sons and friends. His adventurous spirit led him to live on a houseboat and enjoy frequent cruises. Barney also embraced the quiet challenge of checkers and chess.
Known for his quick wit and warm smile, Barney had an innate ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued. His kindness and generosity touched the lives of many, leaving a legacy of laughter and love that will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
As we gather to celebrate Barney's remarkable life, we remember him for his unwavering love, his joyful spirit, and the countless ways he enriched our lives. His memory will forever be a guiding light in our hearts, reminding us of the power of love, laughter, and kindness.
Barney was an active member at Pinecrest Baptist Church on Ashley Hall Road. Since moving out to Ravenel to live with his son and daughter-in-law, Barney had been attending Bacons Bridge Free Worship Center at 1816 Bacons Bridge Road. He loved his churches and his church families.
