Karen Richardson Scogin

December 14, 1951 — May 23, 2026

Goose Creek – Karen Richardson Scogin, 74, of Goose Creek, passed away May 23, 2026 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Karen, the oldest of 5 children, was born in Long Island, NY on December 14, 1951, to Louis and June Richardson. As her father was in the Air Force, they moved around the country, and eventually Europe, quite a bit. Stops included Nova Scotia, Savannah, Cocoa Beach and Wiesbaden, Germany. The family spent 10 years in Wiesbaden. While there, the family was part of the Christian Folk music singing group, Revelation Generation. Mostly made up of children of service members, the group performed for local military, German audiences and even on the road at times. Their most notable performance being an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show (via satellite).

After graduating from Gen. H.H. Arnold High School in Wiesbaden, Karen met the love of her life, Robert Mitchell Scogin, her “Scogie”. The two got married on November 13, 1971, and then moved back to the States, settling in Robert’s native South Carolina. After the birth of their two children, Robert William Scogin and Daniel Louis Scogin, the family moved to Moncks Corner, SC where they stayed for 12 years before settling in Goose Creek, SC. During that time Karen became somewhat of a fixture on Market St in downtown Charleston. She managed The Popcorn Shop, part of the now defunct Gourmetisserie, and then later The Christmas Shop at the corner of Market and Meeting. Karen absolutely loved working downtown, coming into contact with locals and visitors alike.

If you knew Karen, you knew she loved animals – especially cats. Karen was known to care not only for the animals inside her house, but those outside as well. She was known to carry food, water and cat bowls in her car should she encounter a stray in a parking lot or roadside.

Karen’s greatest joy was her family. She was very proud of her sons as they progressed in life, and she would beam with even more pride when discussing her grandsons, Tinsley and Ryan. Karen also enjoyed collecting antiques. Wade figurines and antique oak furniture were areas of interest. She was also an avid reader, erudite even. She read complete works from many of her favorite authors. Karen also loved to travel to the mountains of Northeast Georgia. She and Scogie would travel there a few times every year, often bringing Scogie’s mother, Evelyn, to enjoy the mountain air.

Karen leaves behind her two sons Robert(Kimberly) and Daniel, her two grandsons, Tinsley and Ryan, brothers David(Laura), Bryan(Patti) and Ronnie(Tonia), her mother-in-law Evelyn Fennell, nieces and nephews and her cats, Kole and Sonni, and her white-capped parrot, Bailey. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert Mitchell Scogin, brother Bruce Richardson, nephew Phillip Richardson and parents Louis and June Rixhardson.

The family would like to thank her neighbors for all their love and support during her later years. Sherry, April, Josie, Ronnie and the entire Pelham family were such a blessing to her, and to us. We would also like to thank Dr Holladay and the staff at Charleston Oncology. They treated Karen with such love and respect during her long fight, and it is greatly appreciated.
