Raye Kernells Chapman

With great sadness, the family of Raye Kernells Chapman announces her peaceful passing on Friday, July 17, 2026, in Mt. Pleasant, SC, surrounded by the love of her family. Raye lived a full life and was full of life. Any challenges she faced were met with strength, courage and grace. Raye did not let her illness take away her zest for life, her caring and giving heart, compassion for others nor her unwavering love and devotion for her family.

Raye loved to travel, and being a military spouse, she got to do just that. She lived all over the US and in Germany, where she traveled to most European countries. In her 20's and 30's, besides being a military spouse and raising 3 children, Raye was a fashion model. She carried her love of fashion over to helping others, where she taught classes on "Dress for Success" while working for Casual Corner. She eventually went into property management in the Charleston area, where she has lived since 1978. Raye was a member of the Hat Ladies of Charleston and looked forward to participating in the Easter Promenade in downtown Charleston each year.

Raye was born in Laurens County, SC on Oct. 23, 1938, to Ervin Lee Kernells and Onie Bowen Kernells. She was married to Col. Richard Chapman, Jr (deceased). She leaves behind a brother, Vernon Lee Kernells, three children, Abby Thompson (Chris) of Mt. Pleasant, Pamela Chapman of Summerville and Robert Chapman of Lancaster, SC. She also leaves behind 5 grandchildren, Alethea Mase, Jason Mauz, Jeffrey Mauz, Clay Chapman, Erica Chapman, 7 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandsons and a niece. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Raye's greatest love was for her family. She will be sorely missed by all of her immediate and extended family, and her treasured friends, near and far.

A celebration of life will be held on a later date. The family extends heartfelt appreciation for the thoughtfulness, prayers and kindness shown the past seven months. A special thank you to Agape Hospice for their compassion and support the past few weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or Meals on Wheels, Mt. Pleasant.
