Charles Franklin Denny III

Jul 20, 1944 — Jun 29, 2026

With great sadness, we share that Charles Franklin Denny III died on June 29, 2026, at the age of 81 at the Columbia Presbyterian Community of Lexington, South Carolina, after a long illness.

“Charlie” was born on July 20, 1944, in Danville, Kentucky, to Charles Franklin Denny, Jr. and Ruth Hopper Denny. His father, a Marine, was killed in Okinawa, Japan, during World War II. Later, his mother married Robert Knox Tarkington, Jr. Charlie spent much of his youth working on the family farm.

Charlie graduated from Centre College, with a degree in biology in 1966. He continued his studies at the University of Kentucky earning a master’s degree in microbiology and completing all coursework toward a doctorate. During his research, he discovered a new species of the bacterium, Bdellovibrio. In 1970, Charlie began his teaching career at the Clinch Valley College, now known as the University of Virginia at Wise. In 1975, he accepted a teaching position at The University of South Carolina in Sumter.

Professor Denny is known for his creativity in teaching, including his use of the beloved children’s book Curious George by Margret and H. A. Rey to introduce the study of science by encouraging curiosity about the world around us. Charlie was an admired professor and recognized by his students with awards of excellence. He retired in 2006 as Distinguish Professor Emeritus of Biology after 31 years of teaching at the University of South Carolina, Sumter. After retiring from the university, he worked in the Tuomey Hospital microbiology lab for nine years, using the skills he taught his students.

Charlie was a lifelong Presbyterian. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sumter, South Carolina, where he served as a teacher, deacon, and elder. He also served the Presbytery of New Harmony as a member of the Committee on Ministry and the Administrative Council.

Charlie was a man of many interests. He loved music, coaching youth soccer, playing golf, cheering on the USC Sumter baseball and softball teams, and cheering on the USC basketball teams. He was an active volunteer in the community at the library, in the schools, and with Habitat For Humanity. Charlie lived his faith by encouraging others, leading Bible studies with friends, praying with and for his sons, Jeff and Chris, delighting in his three grandchildren, and partnering with his beloved college sweetheart, Glenda.

Charlie is survived by his devoted wife of almost 58 years, Glenda Wininger Denny; his son, Chris Denny (Alle Denny) and daughter-in-law, Lynn Denny; his grandchildren, Joshua Denny (Natalie Denny), Hannah Denny, and Charles Denny; his nieces and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: Charles F. Denny Jr. and Ruth Denny Tarkington; his step-father Robert K. Tarkington, Jr.; his sister: Margaret D. Hicks; and his son: Jeffrey K. Denny.

Charlie’s family invites you to celebrate his life on Saturday, July 11, 2026, in the chapel of the Columbia Presbyterian Community, 700 DaVega Drive, Lexington, SC 29073. There will be time to visit with the family at 2:00 p.m., followed by a Service of Witness to the Resurrection at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church of Sumter, SC, USC-Sumter Scholarship Fund, or Westminster Presbyterian Church of Columbia, SC.

We will remember Charlie for his love, his passion for family and faith, and his curiosity for all of God’s creation.
