Dwain Norris Johnson

March 17, 1944 — June 2, 2026

Dwain Norris Johnson, 82, of Irmo, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Dwain was the son of Rev. James Norris Johnson and Claudia Evelyn Rector. He was also blessed by the love and guidance of his stepfather, Marion Mitchell Rector. Dwain lived a life marked by kindness, integrity, and a deep devotion to his family and friends.

A proud graduate of the University of South Carolina, Dwain earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering and went on to enjoy a distinguished 28-year career as an electrical engineer with SCE&G. He was respected by colleagues for his dedication, professionalism, and thoughtful nature.

Outside of work, Dwain found joy in many pursuits. He loved golf, especially following The Masters each year. He had a lifelong appreciation for art, although he was red-green color blind. He developed remarkable artistic talent and won several ribbons for his work in art shows. He also enjoyed “wheeling and dealing” on eBay, often finding treasures through auctions and during his many visits to The Masters. Yet nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and to them he was simply the “best Papa in the world.”

Dwain is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl Johnson; his son, Gregg Johnson and wife Megan; his son, Tradd Crawford; his cherished grandchildren, Brennan Johnson, Harper Johnson, Campbell Johnson, Madison Crawford, and Fletcher Crawford; his brother, Jimmy (Tensie) Campbell; his sisters, Pamela Kerr and Claudette (Mike) Kingery; and many extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. James Norris Johnson and Claudia Evelyn Rector; his stepfather, Marion Mitchell Rector; and his brother, Skip Rector.

Those who knew Dwain will remember his warm smile, gentle spirit, and genuine kindness. He had a way of making others feel welcome and valued, and his quiet strength and unwavering love for his family left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the friendships he nurtured, and the countless lives he touched throughout his 82 years.
