Ernst D. Gaida

May 3, 1951 — April 15, 2026

Ernst “Ernie” Gaida passed away peacefully among friends on April 15, 2026, at the age of 74.  He was predeceased by his parents, Margot Manthey Gaida and Herbert Gaida, and by his younger brother, Hans-Hermann Gaida.  He is lovingly remembered by his niece, Sherry Macdonald (Kevin Macdonald); his nephew, Christopher Gaida (Joanne Gaida); his sister-in-law, Colleen Gaida Algar (Brad Algar); his grand-nieces, Emily, Megan, and Samantha; his grand-nephew, Alexandre, and many close friends.

Ernie will be remembered as a man of curiosity, warmth, faith, and enthusiasm for life. He had many passions and took genuine joy in the world around him. He loved sailing, astronomy, computers, and dancing, and he especially loved to travel — happiest on the road, driving wherever he could and discovering new places along the way. He was drawn to boats and small planes, and there was always something in him that responded to movement, freedom, and adventure.

Music was one of the joys of his life. His favorites included ABBA and Garth Brooks, and among all songs, “Spirit in the Sky” by Norman Greenbaum held a special place in his heart. He also had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, whose companionship brought him comfort and happiness over the years.

Ernie was a believer in God, and his faith was something he lived as much as he spoke about. He did not carry his beliefs lightly or superficially; he reflected on them, questioned deeply, and tried to live them out in his daily actions. He believed in the power of positivity, in treating others with kindness, and in meeting life with both faith and an open heart. Those who knew him saw that his beliefs were not simply words, but something he genuinely tried to embody.  He will be missed and remembered with love for his spirit, his interests, his faith, and the unique way he moved through the world with wonder, thoughtfulness, and heart.

In keeping with Ernie’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Friends are welcome to honor and remember Ernie in their own way.

The family would like to sincerely thank the close circle of friends who became like family to Ernie, and who supported and cared for him so faithfully over the last several years. Your kindness, companionship, help, and presence meant more than words can say.
