Maureen Clare Wiltrout

March 20, 1951 — April 7, 2026

Maureen Clare Wiltrout’s story does not begin on the day she was born, but generations earlier, rooted in a family history that reaches back to the passengers of the Mayflower, of whom she was a proud registered descendant. That deep sense of heritage reflected the strength, resilience, and character she carried throughout her life.

Maureen was born on March 20, 1951, in Granite Falls, Minnesota, to Maurice and Dayette Johnson. She graduated from Columbia Falls High School in 1969, but her life’s most meaningful relationship had already begun in 1966 when she met Gary Wiltrout and they became high school sweethearts. While Gary served in the Vietnam War, Maureen finished high school and then spent a year attending the University of Montana in Missoula. Upon his return, they were married on June 28, 1970, beginning a journey that would take them across several states and through 26 addresses.

In 1977, Maureen and Gary settled in Boise, Idaho where they opened their hearts and home through participation in the Foster Care Program. Two years later, they relocated to Joseph, Oregon where Maureen became deeply involved in the Girl Scouts. Her leadership and organizational talents shone brightly as she took on the role of Neighborhood Cookie Chairman for all of Wallowa County.

Maureen had a lifelong love of math. She once hoped to become a high school math teacher and found joy in helping others understand what came naturally to her. She volunteered her time assisting people with their tax forms and often said math was easy because “there was only one right answer”—a reflection of both her practicality and her clarity of mind. Maureen was known for her remarkable organization, her reliability, and her extraordinary talent as a seamstress. In 2019, she brought those gifts to Meridian First Baptist Church, where she took over the Quilting Ministry. Through her work, she created countless quilts that were donated to families in need in the community. She also faithfully maintained the church’s landscaping, tending to it with the same care and dedication she gave to everything in her life.

Maureen is survived by her husband Gary, daughters Amy and Cara, her brother Dayton, sister Connie and step-sister Brenda. Her legacy is one of strength, service, and creativity; a life stitched together with purpose, resilience, and love. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
